2008 Canadian Mining Games

Procon employs numerous engineers from schools all across Canada. We were pleased to become sponsors of the 2008 Canadian Mining Games.

The Canadian Mining Games is an annual academic and hands-on competition between students from major mining engineering programs across Canada. The participating universities include Ecole Polytechnique, the University of Alberta, the University of British Columbia, McGill University, Queens University, and the University of Saskatchewan.

Each university sends the twelve students who best represent their school to compete in twenty events over a brief period of three days. As the Mining Games is a student-organized event that requires significant amount of organization, funding, and efforts, each university takes its turn to host the Games. The 2008 Canadian Mining Games was hosted by the University of British Columbia.

This annual event continues to serve as an opportunity for undergraduate students from all across Canada to network and develop lasting friendships with fellow mining students from around the country. It is also a powerful means to network with the industry. These students are the future of the Canadian mining industry and mark the next generation of mining engineers who will eventually lead our industry and manage current and future mines.

2008 Arctic Winter Games

Procon, along with our joint venture partners KeTe Whii Ltd., were one of the proud sponsors of the 2008 Arctic Winter Games.

In March 2008, the Arctic Winter Games made its return to Yellowknife in Canada's Northwest Territories to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this youth, cultural and sporting event.  The first games, held in Yellowknife in 1970, were attended by 500 athletes, participants and coaches.  Originally the three participating regions were the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Alaska.  Today they are a circumpolar event with representatives from Alaska, Northern Alberta, Yukon, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Russia, Greenland, and more recently, the indigenous people of Finland and Norway.  The Games now involve over 2,000 athletes, coaches, mission staff, officials and cultural performers and are attended by thousands of spectators.

The theme of the 2008 Arctic Winter Games, “Northern Stars - Inspired by Dreams”, recognizes the great potential of youth and provides a performance platform to encourage their dreams and promote their journey of personal success.

Mining for Miracles

BC Children’s Hospital is Procon’s charity of choice and every year we participate in the Mining for Miracles Campaign. Since 1987, BC's mining community has raised over $10.5 million for the Hospital including a record $1.9 million in 2007.

Procon employees donate items, which can include anything from clothing to dishes to electronics. The items are then posted on a private “E-Bay” type site where the staff can bid on them over a 3 day period. The total dollars raised are matched by the company. It’s a really fun way to contribute to a worthwhile cause.
