2008 Artic Winter Games
In May of 2007, The Procon Group, along with our partners KeTe Whii Ltd., became
proud sponsors of the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Arctic Winter Games.
In March 2008, the Arctic Winter Games will make its return to Yellowknife in Canada's
Northwest Territories to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this youth, cultural
and sporting event. The theme of the 2008 Arctic Winter Games, Northern Stars -
Inspired by Dreams, recognizes the great potential of youth. Whether it is a young
cross-country skier, short track speed skater, or hockey player aspiring to reach
Vancouver 2010, or a dancer or musician striving for a career in the arts, northern
youth can achieve at the highest level, if only they dream. The Arctic Winter Games
provides a performance platform to encourage their dreams and promote their journey
of personal success.
The first games, held in Yellowknife in 1970, were attended by 500 athletes, participants
and coaches. Originally the three participating regions were the Northwest Territories,
Yukon and Alaska. As the North has grown, so too have the Games. Today they are
a circumpolar event with representatives from Alaska, Northern Alberta, Yukon, Nunavut,
Nunavik, Northwest Territories, Russia, Greenland, and more recently, the indigenous
people of Finland and Norway. From it modest beginning the Games now involve over
2,000 athletes, coaches, mission staff, officials and cultural performers. The 2008
Arctic Winter Games will be attended by thousands of spectators cheering the athletes
and experiencing the cultural kaleidoscope showcased each day.
