Canadian Mining Games
The Procon Group of Companies employs numerous engineers from schools all across Canada. We were pleased to become sponsors this year of the Annual Canadian Mining Games.
The Canadian Mining Games is an annual academic and hands-on competition between students from major Mining Engineering programs across Canada. The games originated in Montreal in 1991 and have since engendered both friendships and rivalries between young talents from the East and the West each year. The participating universities include:
- University of Alberta
- University of British Columbia
- Dalhousie University
- Ecole Polytechnique
- Laurentian University
- Laval University
- McGill University
- Queens University
- University of Saskatchewan
- University of Toronto
Conventionally, each university sends the twelve students who best represent their school to compete in twenty events over a brief period of three days. As Mining Games is a student-organized event that requires significant amount of organization, funding, and efforts, each university takes its turn to host the Games. The University of British Columbia is pleased to announce that the 2008 Canadian Mining Games will be taking place in beautiful Vancouver, BC.
This annual event continues to serve as an opportunity for undergraduate students from all across Canada to network and develop lasting friendships with fellow mining students from around the country. It is also a powerful means to network with the industry. These students are the future of the Canadian mining industry and mark the next generation of mining engineers who will eventually lead our industry and manage current and future mines.
EVENTS
There are twenty events in which the university teams must compete. Each event is unique, differing from the others in score weight, number of participants and field of study. Some events may require only one participant while others require up to a team of six. Some events are solely theory-based while the other focus on the technical challenges exercised in a mining job. The twenty events that will be taking place in the Mining Games at UBC include:
- Oral Presentation (at Opening Ceremony)
- Mechanical Design
- Equipment Handling
- Mineral Processing
- Surveying
- Mine Model
- Jackleg Drilling
- Mine Rescue
- Mineral Identification
- Gold Panning
- Mine Design
- AutoCAD
- Environmental
- Ventilation
- Drill & Blasting
- Equipment Selection
- Rock Mechanics
- Exam Package
- Mystery Event #1
- Mystery Event #2
One of the unique features of the 2008 Mining Games is that a sponsor supporting an event is allowed to contribute questions for that event, witness the competition, and judge for winners. Procon chose to sponsor the Mine Rescue event.
